BasilWhite.com: The comedy stretch

Since my subpar performance last November at Del Rio in Leesburg, I have felt unmotivated to perform comedy. I perform and I get lukewarm reception or worse for my comedy. This bothers me, because I want to act on creative passions where my awareness of improvement comforts me in the face of adversity.

I listened to an audiobook recently about behaving in a way that focuses on stretching one and exactly one competency. I plan to try this when I perform: to stretch one competency and evaluate my performance for my ability to stretch that one competency and nothing else.

Share your thoughts.

Depends what you mean by competency, but in general I think it makes sense. for example, today at lunch I was working on inking this picture:

Since I'm still fairly new at this inking thing it's overwhelming to try to get everything perfect. This time I worked on having heavier line weights away from the light source, and I also tried out a technique of showing lines with a short series of perpendicular lines rather than the obvious single line. I tried to do well on everything, of course, but those were the two I'd singled out for practice on that picture.

(Anonymous): ouch

sorry to hear this, dude. you are a REAL comedian.

it's not surprising the limp-lobed, lame-brained mofos who comprise the audience in the war$hington, deecee area don't appreciate you.

keep the faith, bro!

you have at least one total, complete fan.

u da man, basil.
