Woody Allen and the "Trap of Material."

Listened to a ~40 year old interview with Woody Allen as he talked about the "trap of material," where a comic focuses on the material as the cause of their success and failure.

What I got from this is that the material is like a lesson: you work on it to become independent of it. In comedy, that means using the material as one of several habits to be and become someone people enjoy and love seeing and hearing.

That night, I talked to comedian Rob Maher. He says he's read my diary and it seems to him that sometimes I get stuck on a formula. Guilty as charged.
